Merrill

Kitten is Angel Food cake with whipped cream and strawberries. Light, fluffy, refreshing, and not even the slightest bit sinful until you realize it will rot your teeth.

Aveline

Pound Cake. For obvious reasons, I hope. It’s heavy, it’s sweet, it’s solid, and it’s incredibly dense.

Anders

Anders is definitely Fruitcake. With extra nuts.

Varric

Not entirely a cake… Varric is bite-sized shortbread, with mixed in candy bits. Because it’s not the size of the cake, but what’s inside that counts.

Bethany

Raspberry swirl cheesecake. Because she’s sweet, tart, and delectable. Anyone who gets a sample is very lucky.

Fenris

Pineapple upside-down cake. Poor Fenris doesn’t know who he is, and is just trying to make his life work again. Ever since he got those tattoos and escaped, he just doesn’t know what it means for his life.

Carver

Yellow cake. It’s perfectly serviceable, but I don’t think anyone actually chooses it unless they have to.

Hawke

Red Velvet. It’s more than meets the eye. Smooth, decadent, colorful, and goes straight to my hips.

Isabela

Chocolate rum cake. Dark, sinful, and after eating me you’ll wake up wondering what happened to your trousers.

Character developmeeeeeent

I mean, if you prefer DA:A Anders to the DA2 Anders, that’s fine… but they’re actually the same character, like it or not.

He’s the same fucking person.

It’s called character progression.

I don’t have the wherewithal to mince words today.

All Justice did was bring to the surface things that were already boiling inside Anders.

His anger.

His resentment.

His frustration.

His hatred of the templars.

His hatred of the Circle.

Just because he spent an earlier expansion squelching down his deeper, uglier feelings doesn’t mean they didn’t exist.

News Flash:

People don’t always act the way they feel inside.

He was always messed up inside, even in Awakening. Some people just don’t bother to look past the surface.

“Oh, he laughs and jokes and flirts a lot, so he’s okay.”

Think again.

There are plenty of red flags and warning signs in Awakening.

Warden: You’re not a Grey Warden? You’re an apostate?
Anders: That’s what they call someone who doesn’t believe in being chained up in the tower, so yes, I suppose I am.

Warden: Not too fond of them, huh? (re: Anders being crass about the dead templars)
Anders: Oh, I know, I know. Most people enjoy being kicked in the head to be woken up each morning. Me, I’m just so picky.

Warden: That’s inhuman! (re: Anders being crass about the dead templars)
Anders: That’s what he would call me whenever he kicked me in the head, so I guess it was pretty accurate, right?

(other lines)

• I’ve never liked the idea of being trapped somewhere, to be honest. It reminds me of the Circle.
• After my seventh escape attempt, you’d think they’d have given me credit for trying.
• I got really good at escaping the tower. Just never at staying escaped. Until now, I suppose.
• You know the Chantry. They don’t believe in executions. If you die, they can’t torment you.
• They can’t make you Tranquil once you’ve passed your Harrowing. I’ll wager they regret that rule!
• No-ooo. No no. I’m just happy to be away from the Circle. One thing at a time.
• I may not have a choice about fighting the darkspawn, but this is a step up for me.
• I escaped from the tower seven times. After the last time, they put me in solitary confinement for a year.
• Eventually, I’m sure they would have branded me a maleficar, true or not, and executed me.
• Never mind me. Now and again I recall that I’m not sitting in a cell and I have to smile, that’s all.
• Someone slaps a collar on you and your response is, “Well, I guess I’ll just live with it.”
• If I didn’t have perspective, I’d still be sitting in a templar dungeon drooling on my smallclothes.

And that’s what I pulled in just a minute. I could find better if I looked for longer.

He thinks that fighting Darkspawn and being tainted is better than living in the Circle.

Anyone who tells you without any kind of emotion — with a completely straight face — that they just got out of a year of solitary confinement… that person is not okay. Anyone who tells you about all the times they ran away from their jailers, and how they got caught and dragged back every time, and turns it into a joke is not okay. Anyone who nonchalantly shrugs while talking about how a templar kicked them in the head to wake them up while dragging them back to jail in chains is not okay.

They are deflecting.

It’s how people learn to cope with abuse.

Justice didn’t do any of that. Justice didn’t chase Anders down at least seven times and drag him back to the Circle. Justice didn’t throw Anders in solitary confinement. Justice didn’t make Anders a mage, or create the Chantry or the Circle of Magi.

Justice didn’t make Anders depressed or angry.

The abuse did that.

How about we blame the system that fosters that abuse instead of the spirit and the mage that tried to do something about it?

The way I saw it, the only affect Justice had (aside from the whole out-of-control merging side effects like blanking out) was that it gave Anders the drive to see past himself and his own suffering and fill him with a sense of Justice (how appropriate!) to try and help other mages like himself. Even in Awakening, Justice tries to get a much deflecting Anders to look past his own “Survival of Me” feelings, to empathise and help his fellow mages.

It was Anders who had enoughanger and hatred to corrupt a pure spirit of the Fade into a twisted shadow of Justice: Vengeance.

Anders isn’t “more alive” in DA:A, and he’s not “depressed” in DA2. What happened is that Anders went from a self-preserving survivor (through wit, deflection, and a hard exterior) to an empathic, justice-seeking revolutionist because he could no longer ignore others who suffered like himself. This wasn’t JUST because he merged with Justice, he already started thinking about it before that.

Also, Anders still is witty, just not as light-hearted because he’s trying to organise a revolution maybe? >_> He still has fun with Isabela and Varric via party banter. Especially Varric. And we know he goes to chill with Varric when he’s not at the clinic or with Hawke. He’s clearly not ‘dead’, but he allows Hawke to see him as his control deteriorates.

What’s the goods?

I will be giving away 6 original hand-painted watercolor artworks of Merrill, Fenris, Isabela, Anders, Sebastian, and Vartic & Aveline, as shown in the photoset above, to six people. They are all painted on 5”x7” The Langton Hot Press Acid-Free Watercolor Paper with Daler-Rowney and Winsor & Newton Artist Watercolors, and the composition of each piece makes them suitable for framing.

Right, because when a queer person doesn’t out themselves to somebody it’s because they’re being bigoted and cowardly. 

I wonder if the OP has ever been in that (Anders’) position, because it’s a lot harder and fuzzier and more terrifying than the confession suggests. Maybe it’s not the ‘right’, or ‘good’ decision to make, but things like that aren’t always forefront in a person’s mind when they’re trying to navigate that scary combination of new romance and coming out to someone. And who’s to say that Anders didn’t tell Hawke later, when he had a better idea of how she might react?

Anders had already been broken, rejected, abandoned, hurt, abused, and betrayed in just about every way possible by the time he met Hawke. How awful of him not setting himself up for potential rejection again, immediately.

Never mind that he never intended to really get into a relationship with Hawke at the time, he’d given up on anything like that for himself and was convinced he had nothing to offer, so it was a moot point. If it was just mindless flirting, why should he risk being rejected as a person if he never really intended it to be more than that?

I do wish that he mentioned it regardless, but I completely understand why he doesn’t. He only mentions it when it’s directly relevant, which is when a Male Hawke expresses interest in him, first. If a Male Hawke is expressing interest in him, he’s got no reason to believe he’ll be rejected, and it’s a relevant topic.

In my mind, in regard to Anders, why he does things at that point and why he says what he says is more about lizard-brain reactions to what he’s just been through, reverting to what he knows and what he’s used to in terms of how to behave towards others, and testing the waters to see if Hawke will accept him in general. He defaults to flirting as a defense mechanism, and then is rather surprised if Hawke reciprocates, and feels more comfortable opening up.

Not to mention that if Anders believes that the ‘whole person’ is what’s important, and has been in the Ferelden Circle most of his life where it seems that homosexuality, bisexuality, or pansexuality might not be at all uncommon (based on what he says about relationships in the Circle), then it simply might not occur to him to mention it unless it was specifically relevant, period.

i was always sad (once i found out) that i couldn’t get this dialogue in-game because as a pansexual person i think it’s lovely. i agree with the above, though, it’s not insulting or unreasonable, and it really doesn’t matter for a relationship with lady hawke (at least not within the context of the game, as has been said he could’ve said something after their relationship was more cemented. one thing i love about the time gaps is the infinite headcanon possibility).
